Buffalo Gals

One of the UK’s leading American roots-inspired music acts, this vibrant Old-Time country string band features high-energy percussive Appalachian stepdance, humour, championship fiddling, laughter, flair and high- quality musicianship in an intoxicating show to remember.

Headed up by renowned singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter, Kate Lissauer, Buffalo Gals’ 6-piece band combines a passion for traditional sounds with an enthusiasm for fresh arrangement and a talent for lively entertainment. They appeal to audiences of all ages, whether aficionados of old-time country music or completely new to its charms.

Specialising in the old songs and tunes of Appalachia, early Bluegrass, early Country, Blues, rags, ballads and work songs, their shows are also enjoyed and celebrated for their humour and witty rapport, which have delighted audiences in the UK, Europe and the United States for over 20 years, making them one of the most sought-after acts on the touring scene.

Despite having only one American-born member of the band, one of Buffalo Gals’ most affirming musical moments was on tour in the USA, when they became the proud recipients of the “Old-Time Mountain CD of the Year” award from Iowa’s Rural Roots Music Commission.

Kate Lissauer has several performance incarnations in addition to leading Buffalo Gals. She performs as a solo artist, and in a duo and trio which include exceptional Appalachian percussive stepdance. She is also the creator and co-arranger and performer with Sonic Silents, an homage to black-and-white silent Hollywood movies, featuring live performance of her self-composed, Old-Time based scores. Kate performs Sonic Silents with fellow masters of Bluegrass and American Old-Time music, Jason Titley and Leon Hunt

“The Buffalo Gals might just be one of the finest old-time country string bands to date, and by far one of the most talented and inventive groups I’ve so far come across.” Maverick Magazine

“A feast of fiddle and banjo-led tunes and song in the high lonesome sound of the South Appalachian Mountains. Led by Kate Lissauer, a champion American fiddler and dynamic singer, they mix ballads, blues and spirituals with soaring harmonies and dazzling displays of percussive step-dancing.” The Word
